Capoeira Classes in London
Capoeira is a Brazilian art form that combines martial arts, music and dance to create a superb workout and stimulating, somewhat addictive activity. Its origins are from the time of the African slave trade in Brazil. It is said that the slaves would disguise their fighting skills by transforming the moves into a dance with music and song. For many years Capoeira was prohibited in Brazil and it wasn't until the early twentieth century that it became legalised when two principle clubs opened up the first Capoeira Academies.
In the UK, Capoeira began when Master Sylvia Bazzarelli and Marcos dos Santos opened the London School of Capoeira. Its popularity has grown over the years and Capoeira is now 'played' throughout London. It is an excellent form of exercise that requires a build up in fitness and finesse. It begins with the 'Ginga', the most basic Capoeira step, which entails moving or swaying from side to side. Capoeira is meant to be played with a partner and over time your moves will improve. As an art form, Capoeira takes time to develop your skills and it may be one year before you are ready to take your first grading. It takes a further two or three years to progress to the next level and up to seven year to be an instructor.
The clothing for classes is quite standard, usually a pair of white trousers with a branded club t-shirt and barefoot or lightweight training shoes. You may consider buying a DVD or the Little Capoeira Book with illustrated basic moves to help with your development.
Capoeira is an exciting art form that is physically demanding and overtime it increases your flexibility, endurance and strength. As part of the journey you are also encouraged to learn the instruments and sing the songs.
