London: A City Looking to the Future

London has an undeniably rich past but its future is also bright. A truly 'future facing' city, London has billions of pounds worth of new ventures and developments planned for its regeneration.

The 2012 London Olympics is not far away. With London ready to bloom with extra business and life, a new 200 hectare Olympic Park is being built in the Lower Lea Valley of East London. The new Olympic Park will dwarf other European city centre parks, being the biggest created for over 200 years. Featuring the main stadium, Olympic Village, Velodrome, Aquatics Centre and media centre; the London Olympic Park will be a diverse town in its own right. Sister-projects, running alongside the main Olympic development, will ensure surrounding London communities and London businesses get modernised waterways and services.

Another big project in progress is the London Kings Cross Central and St Pancras development which will be a fantastic new area close to the Channel Tunnel rail link. It will include half a million square meters of office space, ten hectares of public space, London hotels and residential properties. Elephant and Castle is also having a lot of new money pumped in; extra offices, shops, homes and upgrades to the public transport network will be available. Also, the area around the London O2 Arena will soon see a large amount of new residential developments.

By the 2012 Olympics, there will be over 12,000 new London hotel rooms. Hotel Indigo London-Paddington opened recently and is situated close to Paddington Underground Station. It is a new brand in Europe that promotes peace and harmony; creating an urban oasis where business and leisure guests alike can escape the London bustle. Also in the area, Quality Crown Hotel Paddington, Quality Crown Hotel Hyde Park, and Quality Crown Hotel Kensington offer an excellent service with their prominent locations and contemporary designs. In general, the whole London Paddington Basin area is rapidly expanding and constantly presents new opportunities.

Business visitors will be pleased to learn that many new London conference venues are planned: ExCel London is undergoing a 100,000m2 expansion worth £150million, Centre Court at Wimbledon is gaining more conference and incentive facilities, Tate Modern will expand to include conference spaces, and both Lord's and the Oval cricket grounds will get similar corporate expansions. Over the next decade, billions will be spent improving public transport in London. The London tube network will see significant expansions and capacity upgrades; Crossrail will connect the East and the West of London with a fast rail line that reaches London Heathrow airport; and the East London Link Extension will connect areas that were previously awkward to travel between.

Recently, the Westfield London shopping complex has opened its doors and is full of shoppers every day, immune to the economic downturn. Also, Silvertown Quays is soon to open in East London with its offices, homes, retail outlets and diverse leisure facilities including an aquarium.

The London skyline is renowned for its harmonious unity of old and new design. These new developments are sure to complement London rather than over-write the great examples of existing architecture. Undisputedly, the new London business created will be priceless.
