National Gallery in London

London National Gallery has over 2,300 paintings dating back to the mid-13th Century. Established when the UK Government purchased 36 paintings from John Julius Angerstein in 1824, the London National Gallery collection has grown thanks to the help of private donations which represent two thirds of all the works.

The National Gallery London's collection includes Van Gogh's Sunflowers, van Eyck's Arnolfini Portrait, Velázquez's Rokeby Venus and Turner's Fighting Temeraire.

Although small in size compared to other European national galleries, the National Gallery in London comprehensively covers most major developments in Western painting.

London's National Gallery has moved buildings twice and now resides in William Wilkins design from 1832-8. The more recent Sainsbury Wing extension is a fantastic example of Postmodernist architecture, designed by Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown.

An excellent preservation of Western culture through the centuries, the National Gallery London is a must-see.
