Spitalfields Market in London

The Old Spitalfields Market in London has been in this location since 1638. Just outside the City of London, the market is one of the newest London markets which began in a meadow close to St Mary Spittel. King Charles II gave John Balch the consent to hold a market on Thursdays and Saturday in 1682. The market was incredibly successful especially for selling seasonal fruit and fresh vegetables. In 1893 a new-fangled market building was created to keep up with demand and this lasted for 60 years until in May 1991, when the market was shifted due to the need for expansion.

The New Spitalfields Market is situated in Leyton London and covers more than 31 acres. In contrast to the original site, there is plenty of parking and easy access for cars as well as over 100 trading modules for wholesalers in fruit, flowers and vegetables. The new units are also equipped with the latest facilities required by traders including ripening rooms, cold storage rooms and racking for palletised produce. The new Spitalfields market in London boasts the most wholesale traders below one cover in the UK and the widest selection of fruits and vegetables in Europe.

On the original site, the Old Spitalfields Market in London is still a vibrant arena where fashion, antiques and food feature highly and it is still a popular destination for tourists and Londoners. The market has been redeveloped to include an indoor arts and crafts market, restaurants and shops. Open six days a week (closed Saturdays), Sunday is the liveliest day to visit.
